How the background gets removed

Four steps, all on your own device.

  1. 01

    Upload a photo

JPG, PNG or WebP. A clear subject with some contrast against its surroundings works best.

  2. 02

    AI finds the subject

An on-device segmentation model decides, pixel by pixel, what is subject and what is background. Nothing is uploaded.

  3. 03

    Fix the edges

Restore anything the AI cut away by mistake, or erase what it missed. Use Compare to check against the original.

  4. 04

    Pick a background, download

Keep it transparent, or add a plain colour, a gradient or your own photo. Download as PNG.

Runs entirely on your device using an on-device AI model, so your photo is never uploaded anywhere. The first use downloads the model (a few tens of MB, then cached by your browser), so it's slower the first time and much faster after that.

About this tool

Removes the background from a photo using an AI segmentation model that runs on your own device, so nothing is uploaded to a server. Works well on photos with a clear subject: portraits, product shots, ID photos.

The first use downloads the model (a few tens of MB), which your browser then caches, so it only happens once. Processing after that is fully offline.

If the automatic cutout misses a spot, such as a hand holding the product or a stray edge, paint over it with the Restore or Erase brush to fix it by hand, and drag the Compare slider to check the result against the original.

Once the cutout is right, choose what goes behind it: keep it transparent for a PNG you can drop onto anything, or pick a plain colour (white, the light blue and red that passport and exam-form photos ask for, or any custom shade), a gradient, or a photo of your own. The download is a single PNG with that background already in place.

Frequently asked questions

›Does my photo get uploaded anywhere?

No. The AI model runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly, so the photo itself never leaves your device. Only the (generic, non-personal) AI model files are downloaded once, from img.ly's CDN.

›Why is the first run slower than the next one?

The first run downloads the AI model. Your browser caches it after that, so later background removals on the same device start almost instantly.

›Can I put a new background behind the cutout?

Yes. After the background is removed, pick Colour, Gradient or Photo in the Background panel. A colour is what most application forms want (a plain white, light blue or red), a gradient suits profile pictures, and Photo lets you upload any picture of your own, which is scaled to fill the frame behind the subject. The preview updates live and the download includes the new background.

›What if the result isn't clean around the edges?

Accuracy is very good on a clear, well-lit subject against a distinct background, but fine detail like loose hair strands, a hand holding the subject, or a busy background can still trip up any automatic tool, including this one. Use the Restore brush to bring back anything that was wrongly removed, or the Erase brush to clean up background the AI left behind, then download.
