About this tool

Central government pay is built from the 7th CPC pay matrix: a pay level (1–18) fixes the ladder, and a stage within that level fixes your basic pay. Everything else is a percentage or a slab on top: dearness allowance on basic, house rent allowance by city class, transport allowance by level and city, and deductions for NPS and CGHS.

This calculator reproduces that arithmetic. The pay matrix is generated the way the commission generated it, with each stage 3% above the previous one and rounded to the nearest hundred, so the cells match the published table. DA is left editable because it is revised twice a year; set it to the latest announced rate before relying on the figure.

Frequently asked questions

›What is the difference between pay level and pay stage?

The level is the horizontal band your post sits in: Level 1 for MTS, Level 7 for an Inspector, Level 10 for a Group A entry post. The stage is your position along that level, which moves up by one with every annual increment.

›How is HRA decided?

By the classification of your posting city: X (population 50 lakh and above), Y (5–50 lakh) and Z (the rest). Because DA has crossed 50%, the rates are 30%, 20% and 10% of basic pay respectively.

›Why is in-hand lower than gross?

Gross is basic plus allowances. From it, NPS takes 10% of basic plus DA, CGHS takes a monthly slab based on your level, professional tax applies in some states, and income tax is deducted at source. The calculator shows the first three; income tax depends on your full declaration.
