Reservation Seat Calculator

Category-wise seat split for a given number of advertised posts

Enter the total number of posts to see the category-wise split.

This uses the central government reservation pattern (EWS 10%, OBC 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, the remainder Unreserved), the pattern printed on most SSC, railway and central PSU notifications. State public service commissions and many state recruitment boards use different percentages (and sometimes additional categories), so check the specific notification's reservation roster before relying on this for a state-level post.

About this tool

Government recruitment notifications reserve a share of posts for specific categories rather than listing seat counts directly, which leaves candidates to work out the split themselves. This tool applies the central government pattern in force since the 2019 EWS amendment to any total post count: EWS 10%, OBC (non-creamy layer) 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, and the remainder Unreserved.

Seat counts are rounded so they always add back up to the total advertised, using the same largest-remainder method used when converting the model percentages into whole posts.

Frequently asked questions

›Does this apply to state government recruitment too?

Not reliably: many states use a different reservation matrix (different OBC/SC/ST percentages, and some add categories like EBC or a state-specific quota). This calculator uses the central government pattern only; always check the specific notification's reservation roster for a state post.

›Why don't the category seat counts match a simple percentage-of-total calculation exactly?

Because seat counts have to be whole numbers that add up to the total. Rounding each category's exact share independently can overshoot or undershoot the total by one or two seats, so this calculator distributes the rounding remainder to the categories closest to their next whole seat.
