Net WPM is the standard exam measure: five characters make one word, and only characters that are still correct at the end count. Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Requirements above are from recent notifications and do change between cycles, so always confirm against yours. Exam software (SSC, railways, state boards) scores on its own rules; treat this as practice.

About this tool

A number of central and state recruitment exams (SSC CHSL and CGL for certain posts, several railway posts, and police recruitment for ministerial staff) include a computer-based typing test with a minimum speed requirement. This tool gives you a way to practice against a timer and see your words-per-minute and accuracy immediately.

Choose English or Hindi (Unicode), a passage type (exam instructions, general text, or number-heavy text like marks and fees) and a run: 30 seconds to 5 minutes, or the full passage. The timer starts on your first keystroke. Live net WPM and accuracy sit above the passage; at the end you get gross and net speed, accuracy, consistency, keystrokes and backspaces, a chart of your pace second by second with slips marked, the words you got wrong and the keys you miss most. Your best for each mode is remembered on this device.

The exam benchmark table lets you pick the recruitment you are preparing for; its target appears on the chart and every result says whether you cleared it or by how much you fell short. Press Tab to restart and Esc for a new passage.

Frequently asked questions

›Is the WPM calculated here the same as the actual exam software?

The formula (5 characters per word, correct characters only) is the widely used standard, but each exam conducting body runs its own software, which may score slightly differently. Treat this as practice, not a guaranteed prediction of your exam score.

›What typing speed do these exams usually require?

It varies by post and language: commonly somewhere between 25 and 35 words per minute in English, or a lower figure in Hindi given its typing convention. Check the specific notification for the exact requirement.

›Does a mistake I later correct count against me?

Not in net WPM or accuracy: only the final text is compared with the passage, so a slip you backspace over is not held against you. It does show up in the errors count and the keystroke total, which is worth watching, since every correction costs time in the real test.

›Can I practise Hindi typing here?

Yes. Switch to हिंदी and the passages are in Unicode Hindi, which is what most government typing tests now use (Mangal font). Type with whichever Hindi keyboard layout you use, Inscript, Remington or a phonetic tool; the test only compares the characters you produce with the passage. Hindi requirements in the benchmark table are the Hindi figures from the notifications.
